Australian universities offer a range of degrees and courses, inviting students from around the world. Over 40,000 Indian students aspire to move to Australia to complete their higher education each year. However, students must complete a few exams to be eligible to study in Australia. Let’s learn more.

What Are the Language Exams Required to Study in Australia?

Every college or university sets its own course eligibility and requirements. Students from India must complete an English language exam before securing admission to Australia. Here’s a list of the exams accepted by the Australian Government’s Department of Education:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Managed by the British Council, the IELTS is one of the most common English language tests in the world. The exam tests the four basic language skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening. You must hear four recordings during the 30-minute listening section and answer the subsequent questions. In the 60-minute reading test, you answer 40 questions that check your ability to understand the main ideas, gist and details after reading a passage. You need to complete two tasks in the hour-long writing test. Finally, you must complete a 15-minute speaking test. You complete the first three sections together and can schedule the speaking section on a date and time that suits you. The IELTS awards a score of up to 9 for each section. Your final score is the average score across all sections. For admission to college in Australia, you must secure a minimum score of 6.5. Very rarely, an IELTS of 4.5 gets accepted in universities in Australia. Always check your preferred university’s eligibility requirements to see the minimum score they accept. Remember, the IELTS is required for Australia student visa processing, so you may have to complete the language exam first.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

The TOEFL is quickly becoming a popular option for Indian students hoping to complete their higher education in Australia. The exam tests each candidate’s ability to read, listen, speak and write English. You can complete the internet-based test (IBT) or the paper-based test (PBT). Each section offers a maximum score of 30, so your total TOEFL score will be a maximum of 120. Candidates with a score of over 80 or 85 will smoothen their path to college in Australia. The University of Melbourne accepts candidates with a minimum score of 79 for their M.A., M. Tech and M.S. If you’re pursuing a course at the University of Sydney, you require a minimum score of 85.

Pearson Test of English (PTE)

Aspiring students can now complete a PTE for Australia student visas. Unlike the IELTS and TOEFL, the PTE has only three sections as it tests speaking and writing together. The section takes almost an hour to complete. Students must complete a personal introduction, read a passage aloud, repeat some sentences, describe an image, re-tell a lecture, summarise written text, complete an essay, and answer short questions. The reading section takes around 30 minutes and has 13 to 18 questions, including multiple-choice questions. The listening section can take up to 40 minutes. Students must summarise the spoken passage, highlight incorrect words and write from dictation. After the test, you receive a score between 10 and 90. Any score over 55 is generally accepted. The University of Sydney, Abbott School of Business, University of Wollongong, and Academies Australasia are all PTE-accepted universities in Australia.

What Is the Registration Fee for These Exams?

If you hope to study in Australia, you must register for one of the above tests. The registration for each is as follows:

  • TOEFL – INR 15,500
  • PTE – INR 14,700
  • IELTS – INR 15,500

Each test score is valid for a maximum of two years. You must redo the test if you completed it three years before planning to move to Australia for your higher education. You will have to pay the registration fee again each time to attempt the test. Some students complete the test more than once to improve their scores and secure admission to their preferred university.

Funding Your Higher Education in Australia

The cost of language tests and other entrance exams can create financial hurdles for a few students. You can overcome these obstacles with an education loan for study abroad. When you opt for a study loan for abroad, the lender provides you with funds that cover your tuition fee, living expenses and the cost of language and other entrance exams. Students with a steady academic record can secure funding from education-focused lenders at competitive interest rates.

Moving to Australia for your higher education can open several doors for you and your career. Preparing for the correct tests and working hard can help you gain admission to the college of your dreams. Opting for an education loan allows you to make the journey on your own strength and earn a self-made badge.
